There’s a famous Boy Scouts saying – always be prepared. This applies to gear for nature photography too.

Figuring out the best lens for a particular type of photography isn’t an exact science. You may have different goals for different shots.

In general, you’d do best to use a lens with a longer focal length. This could be a zoom lens, with a wide aperture.

This is for two reasons. First, you’ll want the longest reach possible. Some subjects, such as animals, will involve some distance. This way you can observe and photograph without disturbing them.

Second, we’ll want to provide a sharp image of our subject against a creamy, blurred background. This will make the subject pop.

Photographers all over the world are capturing moments in nature that make us rethink how we see the world. From bears fighting in Alaska to a volcano erupting in Hawaii, these are some of the most captivating pictures of nature.

This picture was taken in Colorado near the San Juan Mountains, and the photographer, Alex Noriega, calls the image "Limelight."

If you have an interest in wildlife or nature photography there is a good chance you have seen an image at some point that has completely taken your breath away. Maybe it was a photograph of a sweeping landscape washed in the golden light of the dying afternoon sun or close-up of some small natural miracle that you had never noticed before that moment. You might even have asked yourself, “How did they do that?
